Rico Rodriguez is back to destroy another dictatorship.

Just Cause 2 is a free roam, action-adventure single-player. It's an action movie where you play the lead. With an arsenal of weapons, vehicles and a devastating grappling hook, you fight your way through military forces in order to overthrow a dictatorship. You can drive, swim, dive, fly your way to victory. The choice is up to you.

Rico Rodriguez is being dropped into the tropical island Panau. Panau is ruled by Pandak 'Baby' Panay, who reigns over Panau with an oppressive dictatorship. Rico's mission is to overthrow Baby Panay's tyranny as well as to find and assassinate Tom Sheldon. Tom is Rico's old mentor, who the Agency Rico works for believe that he has gone rogue. In order to complete his objective, Rico befriends himself with the three criminal organisations in the country: the Roaches, the Reapers and the Ular Boys. Rico then takes off to destroys all sorts of Panau Military establishments to cause chaos across the island.

Your main goal in the game is to cause chaos. You can do this by destroying military assets, completing missions, challenges or by collecting collectibles. Causing chaos will give you money as well as unlocking new missions, weapons and vehicles. These weapons and vehicles can be bought and upgraded at the black market, which can be accessed at any time in the game.

The island of Panau is huge. You have a solid 400 square miles (= 1036 km²) of land to conquer, which leaves you with a lot to do and all this without a single loading screen. Unfortunately, you will have to do the same thing over and over again, at least most of the time. There are over 300 locations in Panau. You can complete each location by destroying all the military structures there and by collecting all the collectable items in the area. And there are over 2000 collectables to gather, so completing these locations can get boring after a while. Completing these locations is close to being the main goal of the game, besides completing the main story line.

If you get bored of completing locations, then you can do some challenges or side missions. Challenges are timed races where you have to go through each checkpoint with the vehicle class given. Which is great to get off the monotonous gameplay for a while. Side missions are missions that you complete for one of the three factions. Most of the missions aren't memorable and can mostly be completed in less than a few minutes. The mission intros have the same animation which might be a factor on why missions aren't memorable.

Now repeating the same thing might be boring, but on the other hand it's also quite relaxing. It is fun to be a one man army and blow stuff up. Also, a grappling hook and an infinite amount of parachutes makes everything easier and more fun to play.

Overall thoughts:
Just Cause 2 is an action game where you are free to choose how you will complete your missions. The huge amount of collectibles and the short missions bring a monotonous gameplay. Nevertheless, Just Cause 2 will give you a fun, relaxing playtime which you'll surely enjoy.
